A bit of drama, but going home today!

Well, our first real surgery has been an experience! I don't think anything is a 'simple procedure' with a little baby. We had the 'simple procedure' done without a hitch...until we left the surgery room. Audrey ran a high fever...about 103...when we got her from the recovery room. She was as red as a lobster and as hot as a baked potato, poor thing! When we got that down with some Tylenol and ice packs, they noticed she hadn't gone to the bathroom in a while so they gave her a lot of fluid in her IV so that she wouldn't get dehydrated. It sounded like a good idea at the time. But then she started breathing harder and faster, and her oxygen levels went down. It turns out the fluid was too much for her little heart (with her little holes in there) and the liquid made her lungs heavy with fluid (called pulmonary edema). I guess you could say she went from dehydrated to waterlogged in a very short period of time. So after some x-rays, ultrasounds, and several specialists, we found the problem and gave her a diuretic to get rid of the fluid. It did the trick!
Meanwhile, we weren't allowed to feed her until EVERY specialist okayed it, and it was about 6:00PM when she finally got some nutrition in her little body! Thank goodness. This whole process was a major lesson to us in patience and assertiveness....there's such a balance there! We worked with some very good people here at Children's, and feel thankful for those angels who help us keep Audrey safe and her parents sane! So they think we can go home today, after a little G-tube training. We're looking forward to getting in a new routine, a regular routine...and no more drama!
Thank you for all the love. We really couldn't do it without all of you, our supporters and cheerleaders!
We really appreciate your prayers!! Our current prayer requests for Audrey are: that she learns to swallow well so she can eat by mouth again soon, and for her heart VSD to grow closed so that we don't have to do heart surgery!
